How To Help

From field research to habitat restoration, your support prevents extinction.

Wildlife research of a rare and elusive species takes commitment and perseverance. UCAN staff often spend hundreds of hours annually in search of a single nest. Over the past decade, UCAN has documented many never-before-seen behaviors thanks in part to the many volunteers and supporters willing to give their time, energy, and resources to this cause.

If we are to save this severely endangered species on the brink of extinction, we need to better understand the birds’ needs, strengths, and weaknesses.

Hands-On Help

Volunteer with us in the lush green cloud forest high in the Tilaran mountain range close to the small town of Santa Elena / Monteverde.  Our research project runs from March to May annually. Whether you are a budding ornithologist, backyard birder, or nature enthusiast, we can use your help.

You will be involved in:

  • Data collection

  • Planting endemic fruit trees

  • Tasks associated with the conservation of umbrellabirds

Please contact us for more details.
